Atonement Church
The Evangelical Atonement Church in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Nord in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district is located on the corner plot of Halemweg 25 / Toeplerstraße next to a parish hall built by Werner Harting between 1958 and 1959 . It was built between 1962 and 1964 to a design by the Berlin architect Hans-Rudolf Plarre with a free-standing bell tower and is a listed building .
history
As a result of the construction activity after the Second World War in the area north of the Jungfernheide train station , a parish was established that was dependent on the parish of the Gustav Adolf Church . It was initially given a two-story parish hall for church services , which was later converted. On March 1, 1962, the congregation became independent as the parish of Charlottenburg-Nord . The contract to build the church was awarded after an architectural competition . The foundation stone of the church was laid on December 16, 1962, and it was consecrated on October 11, 1964. It was named with reference to the Plötzensee memorial , which is located in the municipality's district.
Building description
The church has a hexagonal floor plan with triangular extensions for the entrance and sacristy .
The outer walls of the masonry structure are white puddled . The two-meter-high sculpture of a stylized triumphal cross made of bronze by Adrian von der Ende was attached to the north-eastern outer wall on Halemweg . The walls inside the church show red perforated bricks .
The tent roof is shaped like a dodecahedron , its structure made of tubular steel was left exposed. There is a continuous ribbon of windows below the eaves .
The organ is set up in the area of the chancel according to the Wiesbaden program . The organ , built in 1967 by the Berlin organ building workshop Schuke , stands on the gallery on the wall opposite the entrance.
The altar , pulpit , baptismal font and the simple cross with a crown of thorns on the wall above the altar are made of white stone.
The concrete blocks designed by Florian Breuer, whose inscriptions are synonymous with the immeasurable suffering of humanity, are attached to a memorial wall that begins in the anteroom to the church and continues on the forecourt between the church and the parish hall :
In front of it lies a plate with the inscription: Listen, your brother's blood is crying out to you .
Peal
The triangular campanile stands on the forecourt . In his belfry hangs a bell made of four bronze bells, which was made in 1964 by the foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock .
