Johann Nicolaus Heinrich von Bartels (born December 25, 1856 in Hamburg , † October 5, 1913 in Munich ) was a German painter.

Life

Hans von Bartels was born in Hamburg as the son of the Russian government official Dr. NFF born from Bartels. He studied first with the marine painter Rudolf Hardorff in Hamburg, then with Adolph Schweitzer in Düsseldorf and with Carl Oesterley senior again in Hamburg.

After extensive trips to Italy , among other places , he settled in Munich with his wife, the writer Wanda von Bartels , in 1885 and was appointed professor of painting in 1891. He was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 and became an honorary member of leading English, German, Dutch, Belgian and Austrian art societies. He received gold medals from Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Paris, Madrid and Budapest, and in 1892 the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Royal Saxon Order of Albrecht .

Bartels was considered one of the leading German watercolor painters, a technique that he also used for unusually large formats. His oil paintings have been praised for their energy. Thematically, he mainly dealt with the sea and the life of fishermen, especially on the Dutch coast.

A series of images by the photographer Carl Teufel offers well-staged insights into the artist's upper-class studio house.

His son Wolfgang von Bartels (1883–1938) started a career as a pianist, composer and music critic in Munich.

His daughter Wera von Bartels (-Heimburg) (1886–1922) also became a draftsman and modeler.
