Wolfgang von Bartels

Wolfgang Johann Nikolaus Hermann "Polly" von Bartels (born July 21, 1883 in Hamburg , † April 19, 1938 in Munich ) was a German pianist , composer and music critic .

Life

He was the son of the Hamburg art and marine painter Hans von Bartels and his wife Wanda, née Grohs. One of his ancestors was Johann Moritz von Bartels. His mother Wanda von Bartels (1861-1921) became known as a writer. His parents' house was in Hamburg, Obere Burgfelder Strasse 17.

He received private tuition and was a student of Anton Beer-Walbrunn in Munich from 1901 to 1903 and then of André Gédalge in Paris until 1909 . He then lived as a freelance pianist and composer in Munich and also earned his living by writing music reviews. He wrote for various music and theater magazines.

His main works include the seven Baltic songs : 1. The city, 2. Birch trees, 3. Flower in the moonlight, 4. Early spring, 5. May night, 6. Maisturm and 7. Shadows sink. His last work was published in 1938, the year he died. It is the composition Landsknechte “Our dear woman from the cold well” .

His residence was in Munich, Agnesstrasse 20/0. He was one of the first NSDAP members and had membership number 505 , which corresponds to number 5, since it started at 501.
