Rudolf Hardorff was born as the son of the Hamburg history painter Gerdt Hardorff and his wife Juliane, b. Mielck. Like his brother Gerdt the Younger, he received his training from his father, who was a drawing teacher at the Johanneum . Study trips took him to England, Scotland and the Netherlands, where he joined the marine painter Petrus Johannes Schotel . In 1839 he was in Berlin and from 1843 onwards he settled in Hamburg-Harvestehude as a landscape and marine painter. He is often described as the first German representative of the "marine painter" genre.

Hans von Bartels was one of his students from 1874 to 1876, and Geo Wolters as well around 1890 . Hardorff was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 , of which he later became an honorary member. He was also a member of the General German Art Cooperative . His works mainly show the stormy sea, sunrises and sunsets in a lifelike conception. The Hamburger Kunsthalle owns five works by Hardorff.

Hermann Rudolf Hardoff was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg, Planquadrat AG 24 (170).
