Günther Gensler (also Johann Günther Gensler ; * February 28, 1803 in Hamburg ; † May 28, 1884 there) was a German painter, etcher and draftsman of the Hamburg School .

Life

His father, a gold spinner and gold spinner, was born on October 4, 1753 in Danzig and died on February 12, 1831 in Hamburg. His younger brothers, the painters Jacob Gensler and Martin Gensler (* 1811) , came from his marriage on May 12, 1802 in Hamburg to Anna Elisabeth Koch, who was born on October 27, 1777 and died on December 9, 1860 . The collection of Adolf Glüenstein (1849 to around 1917) contained a pencil drawing by his father, presumably inspired by Gerdt Hardorff to practice drawing, depicting a “hut with a woman and two boys”.

After the father's death, the mother looked after her sons, otherwise they withdrew from their way of life, who later lived and worked together in a summer house. The "Gartenhaus am Dragonerstall" was built in 1721 in a spacious garden in which an arcade led to a pavilion and remained unchanged until 1864.

Like his brothers, he belonged to the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 , in which Jakob Gensler was also a member of the board.

The instruction is documented around 1822 by Friedrich August Rachau (1753–1831), a student of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein .

Around 1826 he taught Louis Gurlitt in addition to his brother Martin . He taught art history and drawing at the Johanneum School of Academics .

According to literature, he lived in Dresden from 1829 and traveled to Amsterdam in 1837 , where he studied the works of Rembrandt and Bartholomeus van der Helst in June and July . In 1844 he visited Rome in the hope of new artistic inspiration, which was not fulfilled.

His work includes over 120 oil paintings and drawings.

The (family) tomb of Johann Günther Gensler is located in the Heckengarten open-air tomb museum in Hamburg's Ohlsdorf cemetery , and in the area of ​​the Ohlsdorf Althamburg Memorial Cemetery on the collective tomb “painter” is given to him, his brothers Jakob and Martin and other Hamburg painters remind.

All three Gensler brothers were also members of the Hamburg gymnastics association from 1816 .

In 1838 he began in Hamburg with the preparatory work for the group picture consisting of twelve people and later known as the "artist club picture". Completed in 1840, the picture was exhibited in the “Hamburger Künstlerverein” in 1841. According to Otto Speckter, it emerged from a bowling club .
