Franz Heesche (born September 7, 1806 in Hamburg ; † March 5, 1876 ibid) was a German painter, draftsman and etcher from the Hamburg School .

Life

Franz Heesche's father, whose first name was also Franz, ran a tea shop and tobacco factory in Hamburg. Franz Heesche once painted him as a tobacco manufacturer in a dressing gown, who is having a conversation with a worker in the tobacco factory. Today the painting is part of the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

Franz Heesche was a student of Gerdt Hardorff (the elder). After studying in Dresden, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1828 . In 1829 it was drawn by Jacob Gensler . In 1835 his studio was at Karlstrasse 16. He was connected to the Hamburg artists' colony in Munich. In 1836 he traveled to Hamburg via Vienna. After a while a study trip to Paris followed. In 1845 his studio was at Alte Gröningerstrasse 15 in Hamburg. Later he worked in Rostock and Bützow for years until he returned to Hamburg.

Franz Heesche was considered a representative of the Hamburg School and was a founding member of the Hamburg Artists' Association , which was founded in 1832. In the painting The Members of the Hamburg Artists' Association by Günther Gensler , which was painted in 1840, he is shown with ten other Hamburg artists and a servant. Franz Heesche is shown sitting at the table on the left. The room shown in the painting represents the upper large room of the tree house on Baumall , where at that time the members of the Hamburg Artists' Association met every Saturday in the summer. In winter they met in the Ratsweinkeller of the Eimbeck house until the Great Fire in 1842.

Franz Heesche is represented with works in the collections of the Hamburger Kunsthalle des Kunstverein in Hamburg and the Heimatmuseum Warnemünde .
