Johann Carl Koch (also Karl Koch ; born May 31, 1806 in Hamburg ; † May 11, 1900 in Speyer ) was a German painter, fresco artist, graphic artist, lithographer and draftsman, who is also assigned to the Nazarenes with individual works . One of his most famous works was the fresco Bonifazius inaugurated church and monastery in the basilica of St. Boniface Abbey (Munich) , which was destroyed in World War II .

Artistic career

After attending the drawing school of S. Bendixen 1823–26, Koch turned to Munich from 1827 to be trained by Peter Cornelius , Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld , Joseph Schlotthauer and Heinrich Hess, among others, during his training at the Munich Academy . During this time he made reproductions as lithographs in order to secure his livelihood and came into contact with Victor Emil Janssen and Friedrich Wasmann , among others . In the period that followed, Koch became a member of the Hamburg artists' colony in Munich.

As early as 1833, Heinrich Hess brought Carl Koch in to paint the All Saints Court Church in Munich.

During his stay in Rome from 1836 to 1839, Koch joined Friedrich Overbeck .

His activity from 1854 at the Gewerbeschule Speyer followed from 1866 to 1878 at the Royal Bavarian Realgymnasium there as a school professor in the subject of art.

Koch, who was related to him through his aunt and wife of Johann Christian Jauch senior , made, among other things, engravings after paintings by Jauch's nephew Friedrich Overbeck .

  • 1849: Fresco Departure of St. Bernhard in Speyer in the Speyr Cathedral
  • Deduction of St. Bernhard from Speier and like him heals a lame boy from JC Koch
