Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (born August 17, 1778 in Veere , Kingdom of the Netherlands , † January 9, 1851 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch marine painter and ancestor of the Koekkoek family of painters of the same name .

Life

Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was born in Veere on Walcheren in Zeeland . Around 1800 he moved to Middelburg and worked in a wallpaper factory. At the same time he was a student of the "Middelburgse Teeken Academie" founded in 1778, where he studied copperplate engravings and plaster casts. In 1803 he was awarded the distinction "Primus of the Academy in drawing and the naked, living image of man". In the wallpaper workshop of Thomas Gaal was also Jacob Perkois, the painter also earned a reputation is formed.

In 1826 Koekkoek moved to Durgerdam near Amsterdam , where he lived until 1833. The painter spent the last years of his life in Amsterdam and temporarily in Medemblik in 1838 . He found many collectors in the capital and from 1810 participated in the annual salons .
