He occasionally signed his works with the artist name Jan van Couver . In literature he is also referred to as Hermanus Koekkoek I because of the similarity of his name to his son .

Life

Hermanus Koekkoek came from the Dutch artist family Koekkoek . He was the fourth son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and Anna van Koolwijk. His brothers were Barend Cornelis , Marinus Adrianus and Johannes Koekkoek . He was the father of Hermanus the Younger , Willem , Johannes Hermanus Barend and Barend Hendrik Koekkoek , as well as Anna Elisabeth (* 1842), Elisabeth Johanna Maria; (* 1845) and Johanna Maria (* 1848).

From 1832 to 1834 he worked in Amsterdam, then again in Durgerdam until 1836 and then again in Amsterdam until 1857. As a result, he moved the place of his work to Nieuwer-Amstel (today Amstelveen ). In 1873 he returned to Amsterdam, where he worked as an artist until 1882. He died in Haarlem that same year.

Like his father and brothers, he is known for landscapes and marine views. He followed the family tradition and taught his sons to paint. Another student was Willem Gruyter junior (1817-1880). In 1841 he joined the Schilderkundig Genootschap artists' association in Rotterdam .
