Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger (born December 8, 1836 in Amsterdam , Kingdom of the Netherlands , † May 1909 in London , United Kingdom ) was a Dutch landscape painter , marine painter and art dealer .

In the literature he is also referred to as Hermanus Koekkoek II because of the same name as his father . Like his father, he occasionally used the pseudonym Jan van Couver , but also signed his pictures with Louis vanstaat . During his time in London he signed some with J. Couver , but also worked there under the stage name Louis States .

Life

Hermanus Koekkoek came from the Dutch artist family Koekkoek. He was the eldest son of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek the elder and grandson of the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek . His brothers were Willem Koekkoek , Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek and Hendrik Barend Koekkoek . He married on August 20, 1863; his son was Stephen Robert Koekkoek (1887–1934). His father followed the family tradition and taught his sons to paint.

Koekkoek painted first in Amsterdam from 1851, then from 1859 to 1860 in Nieuwer-Amstel (today Amstelveen ), from 1863 in London and later again in Amsterdam. In 1869 he moved back to London, where he worked as an artist until his death. Here he worked with Lion Schulman and Gelderman and was also an art dealer in his gallery. He died in London in May 1909 and was buried in The Hague on June 4, 1909 .
