Bilateral relations between Australia and Bulgaria have existed since 1963 when the Bulgarian trade office was opened in Sydney . Between 1964 and 2003 there was a Bulgarian honorary consulate in Sydney. In 1972 diplomatic relations were established between the two countries.

Political Relations

Australia has had an honorary consulate in Bulgaria since 1972 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia , which is accredited by the Australian embassy in Athens . Bulgaria has been present in Australia since 2004 through the embassy in the capital Canberra .

The interests of the Australian government in Bulgaria lie in preventive protection against the trafficking of weapons of mass destruction, against illegal immigration , in the fight against drug trafficking and international crime.

State visits

In 2007 the then Deputy Foreign Minister of Bulgaria Feim Chausheve traveled to Australia. In 2009, President Georgi Parvanov , accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raykov and Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism Evgeni Angelov , was the first Bulgarian head of state to visit Australia. In July 2012, Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Policy Richard Marles met with Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Naydenov and members of Parliament.

Population numbers

During the 2011 census in Australia, 2,915 people said they were born in Bulgaria, 5,432 declared Bulgarian ancestors, who immigrated to Australia mainly between the First and Second World Wars. Few Australians live in Bulgaria, mostly business people.

Economic relationships

Trade between Australia and Bulgaria was A $ 147.3 million in 2015 . Australian exports, mainly copper ore , medicines, iron, steel, aluminum products and specialty machinery and machine parts, totaled A $ 89.3 million. The Bulgarian export goods were cheese , curd cheese , medicines and clothing and they amounted to A $ 58.1 million.

Australia was Bulgaria's 64th largest export destination in 2015, with 0.1% of exports the 26th largest source of imports, with 0.6% of imports. Bulgaria ranks 59th on Australia's list of export destinations and 66th on the list of import sources.
