Diplomatic relations between Albania and Australia have existed since 1985, when the isolated communist regime was in power in Albania. Albania does not have an embassy in Australia, but two honorary consulates in Queensland and South Australia . Australia currently does not have any diplomatic or consular representation in Albania.

The Australian Embassy in Rome , Italy is responsible for Albania. Albania operates honorary consulates in Brisbane , Queensland , and Adelaide , South Australia . Albania is represented consularly in Australia by the Kosovar embassy in Canberra .

In 2012 Albanian Foreign Minister Edmond Panariti visited Australia and met Foreign Minister Bob Carr , among others . A few months earlier, Richard Marles, Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, had visited Albania.

The Australian government has provided financial and humanitarian aid through humanitarian agencies such as the Children First Foundation and Melbourne Overseas Missions . Australia supported various Albanian communities through the embassy in Rome. In 2012 and 2013, she gave AU $ 22,000 to NGOs to support school safety, agriculture and social activities for disabled children.

Cultural relations

The number of Albanian immigrants to Australia has long been very low. In 1933, 770 people born in Albania were registered. For a long time, the communist takeover brought a final surge in immigration. As a result of the Kosovo war , another batch of Albanians came to Australia from Kosovo.

During the 2011 census in Australia, 13,141 Australians reported having Albanian ancestors . 2,396 people born in Albania now reside in Australia. More than half of the Albanians in Australia live in Victoria .

There were no Australian citizens living in Albania in 2013.

Economic relationships

Australian exports to Albania, mainly hides , medicines , prefabricated buildings and margarine , totaled AU $ 2.6 million in 2015 . Australian imports from Albania, mainly clothing , footwear and vegetables, amounted to AU $ 938,000 in 2015. Trade between the two countries is increasing.

Australia is Albania's 69th largest export destination and 65th largest source of imports.
