Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek (born July 6, 1840 in Amsterdam , Kingdom of the Netherlands , † January 24, 1912 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch marine and landscape painter . He also dealt with the technical implementation of decorative art .

Life

Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek came from the Dutch artist family Koekkoek . He was the third son of the painter Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815-1882) and grandson of the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek . Like his brothers Hermanus the Younger (1836–1909), Willem (1839–1895) and Barend Hendrik (1849 – before 1909), he was instructed in painting by his father .

Koekkoek began painting in Amsterdam in 1859 in the romantic tradition of his father, however, after 1864, under the influence of the Hague School , he changed his style towards realism . During this time he mainly painted beach scenes, sea panoramas and scenes from the life of fishermen. Between 1860 and 1864 he worked in Nieuwer-Amstel (today Amstelveen ), then in Hilversum.

Koekkoek married on November 3, 1877. He was the teacher of his son Gerard Johannes Koekkoek and the Lion Schulman . He was a member of the Sociëtait Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.

Exhibitions

Koekkoek's works are now exhibited in several museums, including the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam . During his lifetime Koekkoek showed his work at numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands, including:

Awards

In 1910 Koekkoek was honored in Hilversum for his handicraft products of the decorative arts "with the highest distinction".
