Lion Schulman
Lion Schulman (born March 27, 1851 in Hilversum , † February 19, 1943 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Dutch landscape painter of Jewish descent.
Schulman was initially trained as a jeweler by his father, a goldsmith and silversmith. Lion Schulman then studied with James de Rijk from 1866 to 1873 .
On the recommendation of " Arti et Amicitiae " he received a royal scholarship in 1880 for further training with Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek . He also worked with Koekkoek in London for some time . Schulman opened art salons in Rotterdam (1890), Hilversum (1894) and Laren (1898). His son David Schulman helped him in the business in Laren. In 1895 Schulman organized the first major exhibition with works by painters from the Laren School . He married in 1880 and became the father of Johanna, Louis, David and Margot.
After the death of his wife in 1929 and suffering a stroke, Schulman lived in Amersfoort with his daughter Margot and his son-in-law Willem Willing, a reporter for the "Amersfoortsch Daglad" .
Among his students were Arend Hijner and Johan Jacob Lambertus Vlaanderen.
During the Second World War , Schulman was forced to move to Amsterdam with his daughter and son-in-law, and Schulman was briefly housed in the “Glück” old people's home on Sarphatistraat. After a few days he was deported via the Westerbork transit camp to Auschwitz, where he was gassed in February 1943 at the age of 91.
