Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek the Elder (born September 25, 1807 in Middelburg , Kingdom of the Netherlands , † January 28, 1868 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch landscape and marine painter . In literature he is also referred to as Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek I because of the similarity of his name to his great-nephew .
Life
Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek came from the Dutch artist family Koekkoek . He was the second son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and Anna van Koolwijk. His brothers were Barend Cornelis , Johannes and Hermanus Koekkoek the elder , his sister was Anna Koekkoek (* 1812). His father and oldest brother Barend Cornelis introduced him to art painting.
Koekkoek began painting in Amsterdam in 1836. In 1837 he worked in Kleve , then from 1838 to 1839 in Hilversum , 1840 in Amsterdam, from 1842 to 1854 again in Hilversum and from 1854 until his death in 1868 again in Amsterdam. In 1847 he won a silver medal from The Felix Meritis Foundation (FMF) for his landscapes . He was the father of Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek , whom he - following family tradition - taught painting.
Some of his work is exhibited in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam .

Koekkoeks preferred forest and river landscapes as motifs for his pictures; later also painted animals, marine landscapes and portraits.
