Thomas Gaal
Thomas Gaal (born July 9, 1739 in Dendermonde , † July 16, 1817 in Middelburg ) was a painter with Scottish roots. He specialized in wallpaper painting and portraits.
Life and works
Gaal was the son of George Gael of Gaal, an officer in the English service. After he left, he had settled in Delft . His son began training there as an apprentice to a wallpaper painter. After moving to Middelburg, he joined the painters' guild on December 12, 1764; In 1778 he founded the Middelburg Drawing Academy together with other artists, which he directed for some time as director. Gaal later founded a wallpaper factory that produced wallpapers with landscapes, flowers and birds.
Thomas Gaal was the father of the painter Pieter Gaal and the grandfather of the painter and etcher Jacobus Cornelis Gaal . His students included Simon de Koster , Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek , Jacob Perkois , Andries Vermeulen and Cornelis Zwigtman .
