Jacobus Cornelis Gaal
Jacobus Cornelis Gaal (born September 5, 1796 in Oost-Souburg on Walcheren , † December 20, 1866 in Kampen ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman.
Life and works
Jacobus Cornelis Gaal was a son of the painter Pieter Gaal and a grandson of the wallpaper painter Thomas Gaal . The grandfather demanded that Jacobus Cornelis Gaal also be trained as a wallpaper painter; his teachers were Johan Pieter Bourjé and Johannes Cornelis Haccou . Gaal became head of the drawing academy in Middelburg , but moved from there to The Hague in 1849 , where he began working on etchings under Leonardus Schweickardt's influence . He moved to Delft around 1853 . There he became an honorary member of the "Tandem fit Surculus Arbor" association. A little later he settled in Kampen, where he succeeded Petrus Johannes Schotel as chairman of the artists' association.
His etchings mostly show depictions of animals, often based on his father's models. Four portraits by his hand became the property of the Kampen Municipal Museum.
