Sint Johannes Evangelist is the Protestant parish church of Nieuwerkerk , a district of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province of Zeeland . The originally considerable dimensions of the late Gothic church testify to its importance as a collegiate church .

history

A church in Nieuwerkerk was already mentioned in 1233. Nieuwerkerk became an independent parish through the parish of Ouwerkerk . Sint Johannes Evangelist was replaced by a late Gothic building in the 15th century. In 1490 the church was elevated to the status of collegiate church, for the canons the large long choir was added around 1500, with which the church reached a total length of 65 meters. The hexagonal top of the church tower is unusual for the region.

In 1583 the nave was demolished after a fire. After that, church services were only held in the choir, which provided enough space for the population of Nieuwerkerk after the Reformation was introduced . Up until 1953 there was a school building between the tower and the choir; today there are community rooms here. The parish belongs to the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland, which was created in 2004 .
