Pavlodar ( Kazakh and Russian Павлодар ) is a large city in Kazakhstan . It is located in the north of the country on the Irtysh River on the southern foothills of the West Siberian lowlands not far from the border with Russia , around 400 kilometers northeast of the capital Nur-Sultan . With 333,479 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) it is both the administrative center and largest city of the Pavlodar region .

Geographical location

Pavlodar is located on the Irtysh River ( Kazakh Ертіс Ertis ) in the extreme south of the West Siberian lowlands . The Irtysh-Karagandy Canal begins near the city . Pavlodar is the capital of the area of the same name .

history

Main post office

The outpost of a Cossack garrison with the name Korjakowski (Коряковский) was founded in the present city area in 1720 . It served to protect Russian commercial and expedition travelers from the native jungles . On April 4, 1861 was the Decree of the Russian Tsar Alexander II. Converted into a fortress town and its recent, previously born son in honor Pawel in Pavlodar renamed; dar stands for "gift" in Russian. In 1869 the city became the district center of what was then Semipalatinskaya Oblast .

In November 1917 the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council of the Red Guards was formed and on October 1, 1918 the city became Soviet . On January 15, 1938, the Pavlodar Oblysy (then Pavlodarskaya Oblast ) was founded with Pavlodar as its center.

Religions

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , some churches and religious communities were established or rebuilt in Pavlodar. The most important religions are Islam and Christianity . In addition to an Orthodox and a Catholic congregation, there are two Evangelical Lutheran congregations, a Evangelical Christian Baptist congregation , a Pentecostal congregation and a charismatic community.

Economy and Infrastructure

Today Pavlodar is an industrial center with a focus on the construction and metal industry (aluminum), petrochemicals, mechanical engineering and power generation. In the city there are oil, aluminum, electrolysis, metal, machine-building plants. The Pavlodarski Traktorny Sawod has been insolvent since 2006.

The long east-west route A17 , an important road in Kazakhstan, runs through Pavlodar . The A18 begins in Pavlodar.

Education and culture

Sports

FK Ertis Pavlodar is one of the most successful football clubs in Kazakhstan with five championships and has been playing in the top division without interruption since the country gained independence . The club plays its home games in the central stadium in Pavlodar.

The ice hockey team of the two-time (2012/13, 2013/14) champion HK Ertis Pavlodar takes part in the Kazakh championship .
