GDR football league 1973/74

The GDR Oberliga 1974/75 was the 26th edition of the top division of the GDR . The championship was won for the third time by 1. FC Magdeburg , which defended its title from the previous year. The season began on August 24, 1974 and ended on May 24, 1975.

Season course

Last game day: Aue wins 2-1 against Erfurt and holds the class.

Once again, the first three places between the teams from Magdeburg, Jena and Dresden were identified. This time the placements of these three were exactly the same as the previous season, with which Magdeburg defended its championship title (Vorwärts Berlin last succeeded in 1966), Jena was runner-up for the third time in a row and Dresden came third in at least the international competition. The championship was decided on the penultimate game day in a direct duel between Magdeburg and Jena in the sold-out Ernst-Grube-Stadion when the two drew 1-1. Fourth went to BFC Dynamo, which was on the threshold of its successful era (it was not until 1991 that the team was worse than fourth).

The decision about the second relegated was exciting. Forward Stralsund was practically on the 23rd match day as a relegated team. For the army footballers it was the last season in the top division. In front of that were Hansa Rostock and Wismut Aue. On the penultimate game day, the two met in Rostock and Hansa pushed their way to the non-relegation zone with a 4-0 win over Wismut. Accordingly, Rostock was the favorite on the last day of the game, especially since they faced the other relegated Stralsund, while Aue played against Erfurt. But since Erfurt lost in Aue and Stralsund fought 1-1, Rostock rose from the league for the second time.

Stahl Riesa caused a positive surprise. The climber from 1973 took sixth place and thus achieved the best placement in his senior league membership.

For the referee Robert Pischke , a penalty whistle is undoing. In the game Dresden against BFC on matchday six (both teams had a bad start to the season) he gave Dresden a penalty shortly before the end. Dresden won 3-2 in the end and Pischke was never again scheduled to play in the major league.

    FDGB Cup

The FDGB Cup was won by Sachsenring Zwickau this season . The Zwickau team surprisingly won their third cup title in the final against SG Dynamo Dresden, which had previously defeated champions Magdeburg in the round of 16 and defending champion Jena in the semi-finals.

    International competitions

Magdeburg against Bayern Munich in the European Cup.

After the successful previous year, which was crowned by Magdeburg's European Cup title, this European Cup season was less successful for the GDR representatives. The master Magdeburg competed in the European championship . After a bye in the first round it came to a duel with the West German defending champion FC Bayern Munich in the second round . Bayern prevailed 3-2 and 2-1 against Magdeburg and later won the cup again. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , Carl Zeiss Jena also did not get past the second round. Here was Benfica too strong. In the UEFA Cup Forward Frankfurt defeated in the first round of Juventus Turin , while Dynamo Dresden in the second round against Hamburger SV was eliminated. At the 1974 Intertoto Cup , the GDR again did not participate.
