Dieter Schönig (born January 16, 1944 - April 2, 2010 ) was a German football player .

Athletic career

Schönig was in the seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67 in the East German football in the relay Nord at the second division club BSG Motor Koepenick in goal. Also in the following season 1967/68 he guarded the gate at SG Lichtenberg 47 after a move within East Berlin in this league . After a ban from the winter of 1967/68, he had to take a break until late summer 1968. After the start of the 1968/69 game year , Schönig was deployed for ASG Vorwärts Stralsund . In the following years, Schönig was the goalkeeper of the Stralsund league team. In 1970/71 , the Stralsunders were promoted to the GDR league , with Schönig winning all 26 point games. In the upper league year 1971/72 Schönig was also in all 26 games in the Stralsund goal, which only came to the bottom of the table.

1972/73 dominated the Stralsund in the league season A, but failed in the promotion round. 1973/74 Schönig was used in 25 of the 30 league games. The team managed to return to the House of Lords after the promotion games due to the better goal difference compared to 1. FC Union Berlin . In the league season 1974/75 Schönig was in all 26 games in the Stralsund box. However, Schönig, who had also been team captain since that season, with his good performances could not prevent the Stralsund team from taking last place far behind. He saved two penalties, including on the last game day in a 1-1 draw against FC Hansa Rostock , which made the Rostock second relegated, one of the Rostock striker Joachim Streich . From 1975 to 1983 Schönig was in the gate of the Stralsund league team, which participated unsuccessfully in the promotion round in 1976/77 and 1981/82 .

In the round of 16 of the FDGB Cup 1977/78 against FC Carl Zeiss Jena , Schönig laid the foundation for Stralsund's 2-1 surprise victory in the field-superior favorites with an outstanding performance on the Ernst Abbe sports field. In the second leg too, Schönig only allowed one goal, so that the Stralsund team moved into the quarter-finals after the 0: 1.

Further career

In 1983 Schönig ended his active sporting career. He then worked as a trainer. Most recently, Schönig was goalkeeping coach at Blau-Weiß Petershagen-Eggersdorf in the state class since 2008. Schönig died in 2010 of a serious illness.
