Tokushima Castle is located in a triangle at the mouth of the Yoshino River ( 吉野 川 ), which is formed by the Shimmachi River ( 新 町 川 ), the Suketo River ( 助 任 川 ) and the Terashima River ( 寺 島 川 ). The castle was built on the 61 m high Inoyama ( 猪 山 ) hill rising there and at its foot. The central area, the Hommaru, was laid out on top of the Inoyama, flanked by the Higashi-Ni-no-maru ( 東 二 の 丸 ) in the east and the Nishi-Ni-no-maru ( 西 二 の 丸 ) in the west. Below, the San-no-maru ( 三 の 丸 ) was laid out in four sub-areas, plus the Nishi-no-maru ( 西 の 丸 ) in the west .

In the San-no-maru was the extensive residence, divided as usual into the front residence of the prince ( 表 御 殿 , Omoto Goten ) with the and rear residence ( 奥 御 殿 , Oku Goten ), in which the supply of the entire residence was accommodated. The residence was called "The Honorable Castle" ( 御 城 , oshiro ). This area in the south in front of the castle hill was protected from the protective buildings, the Tamonyagura ( 多 聞 櫓 ) by a long moat in the east and in the west by the Terashima River and the Byōbu-bei ( 屏風 堀 ) called depression . In the south, in front of the main gate ( 大 手 門 , Ōtemon ), was the Miki castle area ( 三 木 廓 , Miki-kuruwa ), which was entered through the eagle gate ( 鷲 の 門 ).

At the time the castle was built, there was a castle tower ( 天 守 閣 , tenshukaku ) near the Yumi watchtower ( 弓 櫓 ), but it was demolished between 1615 and 1642 and a new castle tower without a stone base in Higashi-Ni-no-maru was built on three floors has been. As a special feature, watchtowers, gates and trenches had wooden cladding called Shitomi itabari ( 蔀 板 張 ).

In 1875 all buildings except for the eagle gate at the Miki castle area were demolished. The gate was then lost in air raids in 1945. The walls with their gateways and the inner moat have been preserved. The entire complex is now a public park, Tokushima Central Park ( 徳 島 中央 公園 , Tokushima chūō kōen ). In place of the former residence, the Tokushima City Castle Museum ( 徳 島 市立 徳 島城 博物館 , Tokushima shiritsu Tokushima-jō hakubutsukan ) was built in the style of a residence. - The Adlertor was rebuilt in 1989.

Remarks

  1. It was very rare that a castle tower was built outside of the Hommaru. Another example is Mito Castle .
