Mito Castle

The castle Mito ( Japanese 水戸城 , Mito-jō ) is located in the city of Mito . It was the seat of the Mito branch of the Tokugawa, one of the "Three Families".

history

The simple Baba Castle of Baba Sukemoto towards the end of the Kamakura period can be seen as the beginning of Mito Castle . The name Mito came up when the Eto were lords of the castle in the Sengoku period . In 1590 the Satake took over the castle and improved it. The Satake took over Kubota ( Akita ) castle after the Battle of Sekigahara .

Mito Castle now fell to Takeda Nobuyoshi, then Tokugawa Yorinobu and finally became the seat of Tokugawa Yorifusa, 11th son of Tokugawa Ieyasu , in 1609 and thus the seat of one of the "three families" of the Tokugawa. These Tokugawa with an income of 250,000 Koku remained lords of the castle until the Meiji Restoration .

The first simple castle complex was built on a hill between Lake Semba ( 仙 波 湖 ) and the Naka River ( 那 珂川 ). The Sataks expanded the complex by building a main castle and successive outer castles. The castle was supplemented at both ends by the castle town . In 1625, a simple three-story watchtower called "Gosankai-yagura" ( 御 三階 櫓 ) was built on Ni-no maru, on which the residence was located, as a replacement for the castle tower.

In the San-no-maru area, the 9th head of the house, Tokugawa Nariaki , built the Han school Kōdōkan ( 弘道 館 ) in 1841 . Old or rebuilt buildings can still be seen there today, of which the old ones are marked as important cultural assets.

Today the castle grounds are used by various high schools in the prefecture and city, as well as by the University of Ibaraki . You can still see ramparts and the only building a gate in Yakuimon style . Although the buildings were sold to the Gion-ji Temple when the castle was demolished in the Meiji period, this gate remained.

Remarks

  1. The Mito-Tokugawa had a significantly lower income than the other two branch families.
  2. Tokugawa Nariaki laid out the Kairaku-en park at a place a little further away from the castle .
