After coal was discovered in the region around the Kazakh city of Ekibastus in 1867, mining began in 1913 by Woskressenski Mines AG . In 1954 the central mine was put into operation.
The Bogatyr Mine was developed in nine steps from 1965 to 1979. It has an annual production capacity of 56.8 million tons of coal.
New investors came to the region in the 1990s and founded Bogatyr Access Komir in September 1996 .
Since 2009 the company has been run by the Kazakh state holding company Samruk-Kazyna and RUSAL , the world's largest manufacturer of aluminum . In March of the same year, Bogatyr Access Komir was renamed Bogatyr Komir.
