Bethany Jane Mead (born May 9, 1995 in Whitby ) is an English football player . She has played for Arsenal Women FC since 2017 and for the England women's national team since 2018 .

Career

societies

Mead started her career at California Girls FC before moving to the Center of Excellence at Middlesbrough FC at the age of 10 . At 16, she went to Sunderland WFC and played in the National Division of the FA Women's Premier League. As the top scorer with 18 goals in 17 games, she made a significant contribution to the championship she won. She repeated this success a year later with 17 goals in 18 games. In 2014 she played with Sunderland in WSL 2 of the FA Women's Super League , where she helped the club as the second best scorer with 13 goals to the championship and promotion to WSL 1. As WSL 1's top scorer with 12 goals, she helped ensure that the League newcomer in the league remained. In 2016 there were then only six goals, but Sunderland was able to stay in the middle of the table.

For the "Spring Series" short transition season in 2017, she moved to Arsenal Women FC , where she was used in five of the eight league games and scored one goal. That short season ended in third place for Arsenal. The following season 2017/18, now adapted to the normal European game calendar, in which she played 17 of 18 games and scored eight goals, ended again in third place. However, she was able to win the WSL Cup for the first time. In 2018/19, Arsenal won the title again seven years after the last championship. Mead was not used only once, scored seven goals and was the best assists of the season with 12 "assists".

National teams

In October 2010, Mead took part with the U-17 team in the first qualifying round for the 2011 U17 European Championship . With two goals Mead contributed to the fact that the English women qualified for the second round as second behind the Belgian women who had scored one more goal. In this round, held in April 2011, in which the English women failed, she did not take part. In July 2012 she took part with the U-19 team in the 2012 U-19 European Women's Football Championship in Turkey. Since neither they nor their teammates could score, they were eliminated as third party. In April 2013 they made a new attempt in the second qualifying round for the 2013 U-19 European Women's Football Championship and qualified for the finals at a tournament in Norway together with the hosts. This took place in August 2013 in Wales and Mead helped with the goals to reach the final, which was lost 2-0 to France. But by reaching the semi-finals they were already qualified for the U-20 World Cup in Canada in 2014 . There she was able to score a goal against Mexico, but since her team did not win a game, the World Cup was over for her after the group stage. Previously, she had helped the U-19 team qualify for the finals by scoring two goals at a tournament in Finland in the second qualifying round for the 2014 U-19 European Women's Football Championship . This took place in July without them in Norway and their team was eliminated after three defeats in the group games.

After a few games with the U-23 team, she received her first invitation to the senior national team in October 2015.

Her first appearance was on April 6, 2018 in a goalless draw in the World Cup qualifier against Wales when she came on in the 80th minute. Four days later she came into play against Bosnia and Herzegovina after 57 minutes, one minute after Toni Duggan made the 1-0 win. She then had to wait five minutes longer in the 3-1 win against Russia in June .

On September 4, 2018, she was in the last qualifying game, which was won 6-0 against Kazakhstan , in the starting line-up for the first time, played 90 minutes and scored two goals, but also missed a penalty. This was followed by missions against Brazil and Australia in October and against Sweden in November.

She was then unable to take part in the January training camp in Qatar due to a knee injury, but was fit again for the SheBelieves Cup in March 2019. This was first won by the English women and Mead was used in the three games. She scored the last goal in the 2-1 win against Brazil and 3-0 against Japan . She was the top goalscorer of the tournament with three other players. This was followed by a goal in the 2-1 home win against Spain on April 9 and the nomination for the World Cup in France on May 8 . At the World Cup, she was used in two group matches, as well as the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the third place match. In the group game against Argentina she prepared the only goal of the game by Jodie Taylor , in the quarter-finals against Norway the goal to the 3-0 final score by Lucy Bronze and in the semifinals against the USA the goal to the intermittent 1: 1 (final score 1: 2) by Ellen White . With her team, she then finished the tournament in fourth place.
