North American Football Championship
The North American Football Championship is a generic term for four football tournaments of national teams, which were held under different auspices in 1947 and 1949 as well as 1990 and 1991 in league format. Participants were the USA and Mexico as well as Cuba in the first two years and Canada in the 1990s. Mexico won three times, Canada in 1990.
In 1947 and 1949 the event was organized by the North American Football Confederation (NAFC). In 1947, the USA, which played their first internationals in a decade, were effectively represented by the then top club Ponta Delgada SC from Fall River , Massachusetts . Mexico, trained here by the Hungarian star György "Jorge" Orth , has not lost its 13 international matches since 1934. The 1949 tournament also served as qualification for the 1950 World Cup .
In 1990 and 1991, after the interim merger of NAFC and the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (CCCF) in 1962 to form CONCACAF , the North American Championship was briefly revived. The North American nations of CONCACAF, namely Canada, Mexico and the USA, took part. The USA contested the 1990 tournament with their B selection.
