Randy Samuel

Randolph Fitzgerald "Randy" Samuel (born December 23, 1963 in Point Fortin , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a former Canadian soccer player who was the record player for the Canadian national soccer team with 82 appearances in the period from 1983 to 1997 to September 2010 .

The 185 centimeter tall and 84 kilogram defender began his career in 1983 with the Edmonton Eagles in the short-lived Canadian Professional Soccer League . From 1986 to 1988 he played in the honor division at PSV Eindhoven , where he completed a game for the first team of the North Brabant in 1987. From 1989 to 1990 he then played for FC Volendam , for which he completed 15 games. After joining Fortuna Sittard , he played 32 games between 1990 and 1992. For the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons he returned to Sittard, although the club only played in the second division. In the former, he scored two goals as a defender. In 1995 he also had a brief contract with Port Vale .

Samuel gained further experience on the European football stage in the Portuguese SuperLiga as well as with Norwegian and lower-class English clubs. For example, he played in 1997 for the Norwegian first division club Harstad and in 1999 in Group 8 of the Norwegian second division. Samuel spent the later years of his playing career in North America, where he spent the 1998 season with the Vancouver Whitecaps and the 2000 season with the Virginia Beach Mariners , both of the Canadian A-League . He ended his professional career in 2001 with Montreal Impact .

Samuel, who grew up in Richmond , British Columbia , had his first international match on November 11, 1983 against Honduras (1: 3) and played all three games for Canada in its only World Cup participation (Mexico 1986). In 1997 he ended his international career.

In 2001, Samuel received the CSA's Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Award . On the occasion, CSA President Jim Fleming said of him: "Randy was a player who showed commitment, intelligence, talent and dedication." In 2006 he was also inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame . Today he has his own football shop in Richmond.
