Atiba Hutchinson (born February 8, 1983 in North York , Ontario ) is a Canadian football player who is under contract in the Süper Lig at Beşiktaş Istanbul .
Club career
Hutchinson, whose parents come from Trinidad and Tobago , began his career in 2002 with York Region Shooters in the Canadian Professional Soccer League . After four missions in the same year with the Toronto Lynx in the USL A-League , Hutchinson moved to Sweden in early 2003 in the Allsvenskan to Östers IF . He was one of the regulars during the season and scored six goals this season. At the end of the season, the club was relegated penultimate in the table, but Hutchinson remained in the top Swedish division through his move to Helsingborgs IF . After two more seasons in midfield of the Allsvenskan, he moved to the Danish top club FC Copenhagen in early 2006 .
In Copenhagen he quickly established himself in the central midfield and in the following seasons won three championship titles each, the national cup and the Royal League . For the 2006/07 season he qualified with the team for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and was used in all six games when they were eliminated despite home wins against Manchester United and Celtic Glasgow bottom of the table. For the 2010/11 season he moved to the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer , whose managers had become aware of him during the two games against Copenhagen in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League .
After Hutchinson's contract expired at the end of the 2012/13 season , he moved to Turkey for Beşiktaş Istanbul on a free transfer .
National team
From 2001 onwards, Hutchinson was a regular for the Canadian U-20 and U-23 selection. With the U-20 he took part in the Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2003 . While they were eliminated in 2001 after the preliminary round with no points or goalless, the team advanced to the quarter-finals in 2003, in which they lost 2-1 to the Spanish offspring. Hutchinson played together with Andres Arango as a central defender and was not only one of the outstanding players on his team, who is highlighted in the official tournament report as a strong central defender with a good overview , but was also the only Canadian elected to the team of the tournament. With the U-23 he played at the Jeux de la Francophonie 2001 and the CONCACAF Olympic qualification in 2004.
On January 18, 2003, Hutchinson made his debut for the Canadian senior team in a 4-0 defeat in a friendly against the United States . A few months later he was part of the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup and made two short appearances in the preliminary round. At the following continental championships, Hutchinson was part of the regular team. After failing again in the preliminary round in 2005 , the national team made it to the semi-finals in 2007 , where they failed 2-1 to the USA. In 2009 he formed the basic structure of the Canadian team in midfield with Julián de Guzmán and Patrice Bernier and, after victories over El Salvador and Jamaica, made it to the quarter-finals, in which they lost 1-0 to the Honduran selection .
In January 2007, Hutchinson was voted their Footballer of the Year 2006 by fans of the Canadian national team in an online vote, but the main award went to Julián de Guzmán . In 2010, the first award for Canada's Footballer of the Year followed , which he has won a total of six times to date.
