Norman McLeod (born September 1938 in Vancouver ) is a former Canadian soccer player . He was the first Canadian goalscorer in a World Cup qualifier in 1957 and was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005. His nephew Wes McLeod was also a Canadian international in the 1970s and 1980s.

Career

McLeod started playing soccer at the age of 10 and was already playing as an adult at 14. At club level he was active for the Vancouver Halecos , with whom he won the Canadian championship in 1956 . In later years, McLeod played for the Vancouver Canadians in the Pacific Coast Soccer League .

In 1957, McLeod was part of the first Canadian squad in a World Cup qualifier. McLeod scored the first goal in a 5-1 home win against the USA. Nevertheless, the move into the next round was missed by two defeats in the two following games against Mexico. The total of four games in qualifying for the 1958 World Cup remained at the same time McLeod's only international appearances, in 1960 he was still part of the Canadian team, which made a tour of Great Britain and the Soviet Union.
