Life

Henning Rudolf Horn af Rantzien ( Ranzin ) was born in Pomerania in 1651 to Baltzar Horn and Magdalena Sofia Raden. He began his military career in 1664 as a volunteer in the artillery . In 1679 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1681 was appointed in command of Kexholm Fortress . In 1695 he was appointed major general and commander of Narva . He became the commander of all fortresses in Ingermanland .

In 1700 he was in command of the First Siege of Narva and saved the city from the Russians . As a reward for this he was raised to the status of Swedish baron in 1701 . In 1704 at the second siege of Narva he was still in command. This time the fortress fell and he was captured. Little information is available about his fate as a prisoner in Russia. Together with his six children, he and other prisoners were sent to Moscow . For security reasons, the prisoners were transferred to different camps over time. His treatment during the ten years was characterized alternately by violence and good-natured indulgence, at least at times he had some freedom of movement. In 1714 Horn returned to Sweden as part of a prisoner exchange. However, his two daughters remained in captivity.

In Sweden, Horn von Rantzien was raised to the rank of count in 1715 and appointed to the imperial council.
