Whitehall is a town in Washington County , New York in the United States . In 2010 the town had 4042 inhabitants. The town also has a village of the same name .

history

Whitehall was founded in 1759 by Captain Philip Skene under the name " Skenesboro ". The first document comes from 1765, when the British King George III. guaranteed the land belonging to the founder. In 1777 a battle took place here during the American War of Independence when British troops pursued the retreating Americans during the Saratoga campaign after the Battle of Ticonderoga . Whitehall was also hit by the British-American War . The city calls itself the "birthplace of the US Navy ".

A World War II escort destroyer , the USS Whitehall, was named after the city .
