PS I Love You (PS I Love You) is an American film drama from the year 2007 . It was directed by Richard LaGravenese , who also wrote the screenplay with Steven Rogers , based on the novel PS I Love You by Cecelia Ahern from 2004.

action

The film opens with a scene of a marriage argument between Gerry and Holly Kennedy. They argue about nothing, but quickly make up again. The terminally ill Gerry dies a little later of a brain tumor. He leaves Holly twelve letters that are delivered to her in different ways. The letters contain tasks for Holly to complete; they all end with the sentence PS I love you . With the first letter Holly received on her 30th birthday, Gerry included a tape recording explaining his plan to his wife. Holly's first assignment is to go out with her friends Denise Hennessey and Sharon McCarthy that same evening and celebrate their birthday with them. Other chores include Holly buying a bedside lamp and new clothes, singing karaoke , and sorting out Gerry's clothes, except for his leather jacket. Holly sends his things to his parents in Ireland.

Holly's friends, as well as her mother Patricia, are concerned that they believe reading the letters will keep Holly in her heartache. However, Holly herself is convinced that the letters would help her to come to terms with the loss and to see new perspectives.

The tasks also include a vacation in Ireland with Denise and Sharon, which Gerry has booked for the three of them. In their holiday home in Ireland the friends find two letters, one addressed to Denise and the other to Sharon. They too get tasks from him; they're supposed to fish with Holly and go to Gerry's favorite pub. While fishing, Sharon tells that she is pregnant and Denise reports that she is engaged. In the pub, Holly meets William, who is performing as a musician there that evening. They get closer and sleep together. Holly then asks William to drive her to a nearby village the next day, where she wants to visit her in-laws. Through this conversation, the two realize that they already know each other - William was Gerry's best friend. Her in-laws give Holly another letter in which Gerry recalls their first meeting.

It turns out that Gerry gave the letters to Holly's mother before his death, who did not approve of his plan, but still complied with his request. Holly receives the last letter from her mother Patricia. Gerry tells Holly that she was his life, but he was only one chapter in hers.

In the final scene of the film, Holly returns to Ireland with her mother to visit Gerry's parents again. On their farm they meet William again, this time with his father. William makes Holly laugh with his charm for the first time in a long time, and William's father has the same effect on Patricia.

Reviews

James Berardinelli described the film on ReelViews as "clumsy manipulative" and a "frustrating mix of the good and the bad". The execution is "negligent". Only individual scenes would work; almost all scenes with Holly and her friends would look wrong. Hilary Swank's portrayal is disappointing.

Emanuel Levy wrote on emanuellevy.com that the film was about the “enduring power of love” and contained a hopeful message (“hopeful message about the enduring power of love”). LaGravenese - whose close friend Ted Demme recently died - went to great lengths to show how the friend John McCarthy, who was friends with Gerry, felt about the loss. The character William does not appear in the novel. The filmmakers would have moved the action from Ireland to Manhattan , but they would have endeavored to leave an Irish mark as a tribute to the novelist.

The film was described on www.filmz.de as “probably the most intense farewell in film history”. The film is "touching, humorous and sentimental in the best sense of the word".

The lexicon of international films judges that the unrestrained romantic love story is part of the good tradition of touching ghost films, whereby the film does not want to be questioned rationally, but endures solely through its emotional content.
