Edward "Ted" Demme (born October 26, 1963 in New York , † January 13, 2002 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American director .

Life

Demme began his career as a production assistant at the music broadcaster MTV . Together with his uncle, the director Jonathan Demme (1944-2017), he was responsible for the music video Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen . From 1988 he directed Yo! MTV rapeseed . In his short career, Demme often worked with Denis Leary . His best-known film was Blow with Johnny Depp , Penélope Cruz and Franka Potente in 2001 .

Ted Demme collapsed and suffered a heart attack on January 13, 2002 after playing a charitable celebrity basketball game . Only the 38-year-old was found dead at the Santa Monica Hospital. A later autopsy found small traces of cocaine in his blood. Since Demme had thickened heart arteries and was overweight, it could not be ruled out that the low dose of cocaine also played a role in the heart attack caused by a blocked artery. However, the coroners basically rated the death as an accident.
