Nellie McKay (born April 13, 1982 in London ) is an American singer , songwriter and actress .

Life

McKay was born in London to the English director and writer Malcolm McKay and an American actress. After their parents divorced, she moved to New York with her mother at the age of two , where they stayed until 1994. After a year in Olympia, Washington , they moved back to the east coast of Pennsylvania , where McKay attended high school.

In 2000 she began studying at the Manhattan School of Music . Bored and dissatisfied, however, she left it after two years. She has now appeared in New York clubs as a singer and stand-up comedian and turned to the anti-folk scene.

In February 2003 she was in the opening act for the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at Tonic, on New York's Lower East Side . For this she got good reviews, signed a contract with Columbia Records and started the production of her first album in late summer 2003.

Their music includes different genres from jazz to hip-hop to disco and funk . The dynamic style and her penetrating lyrics mark her as an original singer. Their songs often also contain political themes. She is a member of PETA and her song Columbia Is Bleeding is about the cruel treatment of animals by Columbia University . John describes her opinion on her favorite politician, Ralph Nader . She also appears regularly at benefit concerts.

Her critically acclaimed first album Get Away from Me, produced by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick , was released on Columbia Records in February 2004. The title alludes to the piece Come Away with Me by Norah Jones and expresses her dissatisfaction with modern jazz . McKay is the first woman to release a double CD as a debut album. Nellie McKay reached # 187 on the Billboard chart with Get Away from Me .

Pretty Little Head , which includes duets with kd lang and Cyndi Lauper , was released in October 2006 after some delays. Previously there were disputes with the record company about the structure and titles of the album. McKay insisted on releasing 23 tracks with a total length of 65 minutes, however Columbia only wanted to support 16 tracks with a total length of 45 minutes. McKay left Columbia and released her album on his own terms as a double CD on SpinART Records.

Obligatory Villagers was released in the USA on September 25, 2007 and is only available as an imported product in Germany. McKay released this album on Hungry Mouse Records and dedicated it to the many disappearing sights in the Poconos , a mountain range in Pennsylvania .

For the soundtrack of the film PS I Love You , in which she played Hilary Swank's sister, she contributed the song of the same name, PS I Love You .

Broadway

McKay first appeared on Broadway in 2006 as Polly Peachum in the musical version of Threepenny Opera with Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cumming . For her role, she received a Theater World Award in the Outstanding Debut Performance category.
