Guillaume de Berghes

Guillaume de Glymes de Berghes, Baron von Grimberghe (also Willem van Bergen or Wilhelm von Berghes ; * 1551 in Antwerp , † April 27, 1609 in Cambrai ) was a Roman Catholic prince-archbishop , philosopher and lawyer . He is said to have played an important role in Liège politics at that time.

Life

Berghes came from the noble family of Glymes from Brabant . He studied at the universities of Leuven , Bologna and Rome . At the latter he became a Doctor of Laws PhD . From 1575 to 1583 he held the position of papal chamberlain under Pope Gregory XIII. inside. In 1578 he was also canon and dean of the Lateran basilica of St. John . On January 5, 1583 he was appointed canon of the Lambertus Cathedral in Liège , where he was then cathedral dean .

On April 14, 1597 he was appointed Bishop of Antwerp , on April 9, 1601, Prince-Archbishop of Cambrai and thus ruler of the Cambrai Monastery with the rank of duke . His episcopal ordination as Archbishop of Cambrai did not take place until December 30, 1601. During his time as Bishop of Antwerp, he was also abbot of Hemiksem .
