Tullio De Mauro (born March 31, 1932 in Torre Annunziata ; † January 5, 2017 in Rome ) was an Italian linguist , lexicographer , translator and non-party politician . In the Amato II cabinet he held the post of Italian Minister of Education.

Life

Tullio de Mauro attended school in Rome and studied at the La Sapienza University there , where he was a student of Antonino Pagliaro . In 1963 he published his first book Storia linguistica dell'Italia unita , and in 1967 he published his Italian translation of Ferdinand de Saussure's Cours de linguistique générale .

In 1975 De Mauro was elected to the Lazio Regional Council. From April 25, 2000 to June 11, 2001, he was Minister of Education under Giuliano Amato . He taught at the humanities faculty of the University of Rome and was a member of the Accademia della Crusca and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and, since 1989, of the Academia Europaea .

De Mauro died at the age of 84.

His older brother was the journalist Mauro De Mauro , who was murdered by members of the Mafia in 1970 for his reporting .
