Mauro De Mauro (born September 6, 1921 in Foggia , † September 16, 1970 in Palermo ) was an Italian journalist who was murdered by members of the mafia for his reporting . The exact circumstances and background to his kidnapping and murder have not yet been clarified with any certainty.

Life

De Mauro has worked as a reporter for various local newspaper publishers since moving to Palermo. From 1959 he worked for the nationally published L'Ora . Since he had special skills in this area, he was employed in the field of investigative journalism .

Many of his reports dealt with the victims and assassinations of the Mafia. One of his reports dealt with Enrico Mattei, the manager of Eni , who was killed in an airplane accident under unexplained circumstances . The Italian filmmaker Francesco Rosi asked De Mauro again in 1970 to reconstruct Mattei's last days for a planned film. During his renewed research, De Mauro came across a tape recording that he wanted to evaluate. He told his work colleagues that he had material about a mafia conspiracy that would shake Italy.

Furthermore, he dealt at this point with his former acquaintance Junio Valerio Borghese and his planned coup. On September 16, 1970 Mauro De Mauro disappeared, his body was never found (see: Lupara Bianca ).

Three theories are discussed as motives for Mauro De Mauro's murder: the Borghese case, the Mattei case and a possible discovery of a drug smuggling ring between Sicily and the United States.

The Pentito Gaspare Mutolo testified in 1994 that De Mauro was kidnapped and strangled by the Cosa Nostra that day . Rosario Naimo, also a former member of the Mafia, testified after his arrest and during a trial in 2011. He also gave the Mafia boss Salvatore Riina as the client as well as Mauro's reporting, which harms the Mafia, and their interest in Mauro's sources as a reason. According to a court in Palermo, Riina could not be proven beyond doubt, as was announced in a hearing on June 10, 2011. Another reason for the murder was provided by the Pentito Francesco Di Carlo, who gave Mauro's investigations and his knowledge of the planned coup of Junio Valerio Borgheses as the reason.

Others
