from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ugo Amaldi (born August 26, 1934 in Rome ) is an Italian experimental physicist . He works at the University of Milan . His main research area is particle physics at large particle accelerators .

Life

Ugo Amaldi is the son of the physicist Edoardo Amaldi . He completed his physics studies at the University of Rome in 1957 with a laureate . In 1960 he graduated with work on the electron - synchrotron in Frascati . Until 1973 he taught in Rome at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità . From 1963 to 1966 he was group leader at the synchrotron, and in 1967 he completed his habilitation. In 1968 he also became director of the Sezione Sanità of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (National Institute for Nuclear Physics).

From 1960 Amaldi also worked on experiments at CERN in Geneva , initially on the proton synchrotron, and from 1970 on the ISR storage ring . In 1973 he moved entirely to CERN. In 1975 he was one of the founders of the CHARM collaboration .

In 1982 Amaldi was appointed professor at the University of Milan. In 1983 he also became the spokesman for DELPHI at the new CERN accelerator LEP . In 1991 he initiated a hadron therapy project in Novara .

At CERN, Amaldi began research on nucleon-nucleon interaction . The proton knock-out method for the structural investigation of atomic nuclei with high-energy electrons comes from him, and later he also applied it to atomic and molecular physics. In 1970 Amaldi was the first to carry out experiments on elastic proton-proton scattering and obtained important results about their cross-section . Amaldi can demonstrate further achievements in the areas of pion generation , neutrino scattering and Z-resonance . He has made outstanding innovations and initiated new research fields and directions of investigation. For accelerator technology his concept opposite electron is the positron - linear accelerator relevant. In the 1990s he increasingly worked on nuclear medicine topics .

A textbook on radiation physics that he wrote together with his father is one of the standard works in Italy, and he also wrote several others.

Honors

Ugo Amaldi is a member of the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze , whose Grimaldi Prize he received. In 1993 he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University . In 1995 he received the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize and gave two Wolfgang Paul lectures in Bonn . In 1997 he received the Russian Order of Friendship . In 2012 he was made an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich .
