The Ain Shams University ( Arabic جامعة عين شمس Jamiat Ain Schams , DMG Ǧāmiʿat ʿAin Šams , English Ain Shams University ) is a higher educational institution in Cairo , Egypt , which was founded in 1950.

history

Ain Shams University was founded in 1950 as the third non-denominational Egyptian public university under the name " Ibrahim Pascha University". The two older universities of this type are the University of Cairo (founded in 1908; 1940–1952: Fuad-I. University) and the University of Alexandria (1938–1952: Faruq-I. University).

After the revolution of 1952 , the former Wali (governor) of the Ottoman province of Egypt was no longer the namesake and in 1954 the decision was made for “Ain-Shams”. "Ain-Shams" is the Arabic name for Heliopolis and stands for the return to the 3000 BC. u. Z. founded "University O'N" by which the life house of Heliopolis is meant to which the obelisk in the logo of the university says.

The initially eight faculties for art , law , economics, natural sciences , technology , medicine, agriculture and the women's college have since been expanded to 15 faculties. This was followed by the teacher college and faculties for languages ​​(Al-Alsun), pharmacy , dentistry, computer science , nursing science , environmental research and special education.

In the academic year 2005/06 the university had 197,032 students and 9,338 employees. The largest faculties in 2005 were economics, law, and arts.

The seven campuses of the Ain-Schams-Universität are distributed in the greater Cairo area.

Abbasiya

There are four campuses in Abbasiya : the two main campuses, the Ain-Schams-Hospital with the medical faculty and the technical faculty. Abbasiya is also home to the university administration in the historic Zafaaran Palace .

Heliopolis

Both the women's college and the teacher college are located in the Heliopolis district .

Shubra al-Khaimah

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences is located in the city of Shubra al-Khaimah in the greater Cairo area.
