Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu ( ekmeɫeddiŋ ihsɑnoɰlu , listen ? / I ; * 1943 in Cairo ) is a Turkish historian of science , was the long-time director of the OIC Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) in Istanbul and was Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Studies from 2005 to 2013 Conference (OIC). Origin and education

His father Mehmed Ihsan Efendi was born in Yozgat in 1902 . He completed his school education in Yozgat. He began his academic career in Istanbul and continued it one year after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1924 at the age of 24 in Cairo .

İhsanoğlu grew up in Egypt and studied natural sciences at Ain Shams University in Cairo from 1962 to 1966 , where he obtained a B.Sc. Degree obtained. During his studies he worked in the National Library in Cairo cataloging Ottoman manuscripts and books and taught Turkish language and literature. In the following years he worked in the chemistry department at al-Azhar University , where he received his Master of Science degree in chemistry in 1970 .

Scientific career

In 1970 he moved to Turkey and received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Ankara University in 1974 . This was followed by a stay as a research assistant at Exeter University in Great Britain from 1975 to 1977 . 1970 to 1980 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Ankara, since 1978 also at the Inönü University in Malatya .

In 1980 İhsanoğlu became General Director of the newly established Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), which is a sub-organization of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). IRCICA is based in the Yıldız Palace in Istanbul. In 1984 he founded the History of Science Department at Istanbul University and headed it until it was closed by the Turkish University Council YÖK in 2000. At the same time, he was director of the Turkish Society for the History of Science and the Museum and Documentation Center for the History of Science at Istanbul University. In 2003 he was visiting professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. He is a member of numerous national and international scientific organizations.

In December 2004, he was the first Turkish candidate to be elected Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

He was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter A Common Word between Us and You of October 13, 2007, which the personalities of Islam sent to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere" calling for a dialogue about commonalities between religions. It was a reaction to the respected Regensburg lecture that Benedict XVI. held on September 12, 2006 at the University of Regensburg. The “common word” ultimately led to the creation of the Catholic-Islamic Forum in Rome .

2014 presidential candidate and 2015 general election candidate

He was the jointly proposed candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in the 2014 presidential election in Turkey, in which he lost 38.3 percent.

For the parliamentary elections in Turkey 2015 on June 7th, İhsanoğlu ran for the right-wing extremist party of the Nationalist Movement for Istanbul Province and was elected to the Grand National Assembly. He was re-elected in the new election in November that year .
