The International Islamic University Malaysia ( English International Islamic University Malaysia ; IIUM ) is an international Islamic university in Petaling Jaya near Kuala Lumpur , the capital of Malaysia . It was founded in 1983.

Its Chancellor (Constitutional Head) is Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Riayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah .

On May 20, 1983, the University received the Establishment Order from Her Majesty the King , Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin al-Mu'adzam Shah, following diplomatic arrangements for joint funding between the Malaysian government and Bangladesh , Egypt , Libya , the Maldives , Pakistan , Saudi Arabia , Turkey and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The IIUM works under the direction of a Board of Governors with representatives of the eight financially supporting governments and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation . It has ties to governments and institutions around the world such as the League of Islamic Universities , the International Association of Universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities .

Mohammad Hashim Kamali was the Dean of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) and Professor of Islamic Law from 1985 to 2007 .
