Aischa Abd ar-Rahman ( Egyptian-Arabic Aisha Abdelrahman , born 1913 in Damiette ; died December 1, 1998 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian writer and literary scholar . She wrote under the pseudonym Bint asch-Schati ("the daughter of the shore").

life and work

Aischa Abd ar-Rahman was the daughter of a religion teacher and was registered for school by her mother, who was illiterate herself, when her father was traveling when she was ten. She later attended a middle school in al-Mansura and from 1932 studied Arabic language and literature at the University of Cairo . There she fell in love with her much older professor Amin al-Khuli, whom she married. In 1939 she obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Cairo, then worked for three years as a university lecturer, during which time she received her master's degree in 1941. From 1942 she worked as an inspector for classes in Arabic and literature in the Egyptian Ministry of Education. She obtained her doctorate in 1950 and taught from 1951 at the Ain-Schams University in Cairo as well as a visiting professor a. a. also at universities in Khartoum , Fez and Beirut .

From 1931 she wrote articles in Egyptian magazines under the pseudonym Bint asch-Shati , among others. a. in an-Nahda an-Nisa'iya and al-Ahram , and was inducted into the High Council for the Arts and Culture of Egypt. Her literary work includes numerous newspaper articles as well as more than 60 books. a. Studies on Koran exegesis and Arabic literature, biographies of important early Islamic women in the vicinity of the Prophet Mohammed ( The Prophet's Wives , 1959; The Prophet's Daughters , 1963; The Prophet's Mother , 1966), articles on the difficult Egyptian country life and novels and short stories. In 1985 a statue was erected in her honor in Cairo. She died in Cairo in 1998 at the age of 85 after a heart attack . She donated her library for research purposes.
