The Chamber of Commerce Eupen-Malmedy, St. Vith (until 1929 Chamber of Commerce Eupen ) is a Belgian Chamber of Commerce based in Eupen . It is the only IHK in the German-speaking Community .

history

In 1783, under Habsburg rule, a merchants' college, a kind of chamber of commerce, was set up in Eupen. Habsburg rule ended with the French annexation of the left bank of the Rhine .

On April 12, 1804, a government decree by Napoleon ordered the establishment of a “Chambre consultative de manufactures, fabriques, arts et metiers” in 154 French cities, including Eupen and Malmedy. The first chamber elections were held on March 5, 1805. The chamber president was the mayor of Eupen.

After the Congress of Vienna , Eupen became Prussian . The French regulations regarding the consultative chambers of commerce remained in force unchanged.

With the law of February 11, 1848, the possibility of forming a chamber of commerce was newly regulated in Prussia. On October 28, 1848, the Consultative Chamber applied for conversion into a Chamber of Commerce under this Act. This was not granted. On December 11, 1857, another application was made, which the king gave his approval on September 12, 1858. The new chamber was named Eupen Chamber of Commerce.

In 1897 the chamber district was expanded to include the Malmedy and Montjoie districts . In 1914 (the Ministry's approval took place in 1915) the chamber area was expanded to include the Schleiden district . This increased the number of chamber members from 15 to 20. Of these, seven were in the Eupen district, five each in Malmedy and Schleiden and 3 in Montjoie,

At the end of the First World War , Eupen and Malmedy were annexed by Belgium . The half of the chamber district remaining with Germany came to the Aachen Chamber of Commerce . With a decree of April 18, 1922, the Eupen Chamber of Commerce lost its public law status and was converted into a professional association under private law.

On December 12, 1929, the general assembly approved a new statute. The name is now the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Eupen-Malmedy-St.Vith. The chamber district comprised the cantons of Eupen , Malmedy and St. Vith .

With the beginning of the Second World War , the chamber area returned to Germany in 1938. The chamber was now again as a German IHK professional corporation under public law . At the same time took place DC circuit by the Nazis. The president was appointed, the leader principle introduced and the self-government of the economy ended.

With a decree of June 19, 1940, the IHK Eupen was dissolved and the chamber district was assigned to the Aachen Chamber of Commerce. Eupen remained a branch of the Aachen Chamber of Commerce. The IHK Aachen was also dissolved in 1942 and merged into the Gau Wirtschaftskammer .

With the occupation by the American troops, the work of the chamber was briefly interrupted, but it resumed work as early as 1944. Now part of Belgium again, the legal status of the Chamber was the same as it was before 1938.

On January 17, 1961, the legal form (analogous to the other Belgian chambers) was changed from a free professional association to a non-profit making company.
