The three eastern cantons: The cantons of Eupen (north) and Sankt Vith (south), which are part of the German-speaking Community (shown here in yellow), and between them the canton of Malmedy, consisting of the municipalities of Malmedy and Weismes (French: Waimes )

The canton of Malmedy consists of the two Belgian municipalities Malmedy and Weismes . Officially, the term canton is used on the one hand for the electoral canton of Malmedy, but also for the larger court canton of Malmedy-Spa-Stavelot . Colloquially, however, the canton only refers to the region of the municipalities of Malmedy and Weismes.

The canton of Malmedy, together with the two cantons of Eupen and St. Vith , which make up the German-speaking community , is one of the three historic eastern cantons and also belongs to the French community of Belgium . The canton of Malmedy is part of the Verviers constituency in the province of Liège , which as a whole belongs to Wallonia .

From 1815 to 1920 Malmedy belonged to the Prussian Rhine Province and was the seat of the administrative district of Malmedy .

language

The canton belongs to the French-speaking area, but in order to protect the German-speaking minority, both municipalities were designated as municipalities with facilities (or “municipalities with language facilities”). This means that certain facilities and public services of the municipalities concerned must be offered not only in French, but also in German.
