Charles E. Butterworth

Charles Edwin Butterworth (born July 9, 1938 in Michigan , Detroit ) is an American political scientist , Islamic scholar and historian of philosophy .

Life

Butterworth received his BA from Michigan State University . He continued his studies in political philosophy , Arabic and Islamic studies up to an MA at the University of Chicago , eventually earning a Ph.D. complete. After studying at the Ain-Schams University ( Cairo ) and the University of Bordeaux , he earned a further doctorate in philosophy from the University of Nancy .

Butterworth first taught at the University of Chicago and Federal City College before he was appointed assistant professor (1969–1976), promoted associate professor (1976–1983) and finally professor (1983–2007) at the University of Maryland ). He has been retired since 2007.

He has also been invited to the Middle East , North and West Africa, and West and Central Europe as a visiting professor on numerous occasions.

He was also President of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies (ACSIS) and of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de l'Histoire de la Philosophie et la Science Arabe et Islamique (SIHSPAI).

Research priorities

Butterworth has created text-critical editions of Averroes ' middle commentaries on Aristotle 's logic (and other Aristotelian texts) and of treatises by Averroes, al-Fārābī and ar-Razi and Maimonides .

In addition, he has published on various aspects of the political thinking of these and other thinkers from ancient, medieval and modern times. In the field of modern political thought, he has written a monograph on the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and a series of articles on the psychiatrist and politician Frantz Fanon .
