The University of Assiut is an Egyptian university in Upper Egypt . It is located in the city ​​of the same name .

The university was founded in 1957, making it the first Egyptian university in Upper Egypt. In the 1970s a branch was spun off as al-Minya University . In 1998/99 there were 62,776 students enrolled at the University of Assiut, in 2004/2005 there were 63,995 students (undergraduate) and 4,927 post-graduate students. The number of lecturers at the university rose from 21 lecturers and six assistants in 1957 to 2355 lecturers (24.6% of whom were women) and 1408 assistants (48% of whom were women) in 2007. The official languages ​​of instruction at the university are Arabic and English, depending on the faculty.
