Fathulla Jameel

Fathulla (Fatuhullah) Jameel (born September 5, 1942 - March 1, 2012 in Singapore ) was a diplomat and politician of the Maldives , who was foreign minister for 27 years between 1978 and 2005 .

Life

After attending school, Jameel, a son of the later Minister of Justice and Attorney General Muhammad Jameel Didi, studied philosophy and Islamic theology ( ʿIlm al-kalām ) at al-Azhar University in Cairo like his father , completing this degree in 1967 a Bachelor of Arts (BA Philosophy and Islamic Theology). After a postgraduate teacher training course at Ain-Shams University and his return to the Maldives, he became a teacher at the Majeediyya School on November 18, 1969 .

In 1973 he moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was Undersecretary of State for International Organizations and Foreign Aid until 1976 and at the same time briefly acting Undersecretary of State for Foreign Aid in the Prime Minister's Office in 1974. In 1974 he completed a course in international relations in the Australian Foreign Ministry and, on his return in 1975, was acting Undersecretary in the Ministry of Transport for a period. After he was Deputy Secretary of State between 1976 and 1977, he was most recently Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations in New York City between 1977 and 1978 .

At the end of President Ibrahim Nasir's term of office , he was appointed Foreign Minister on March 14, 1978. He also assumed this office after President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom took office on November 11, 1978, and held this position for more than 27 years until his resignation and his replacement by Ahmed Shaheed on July 14, 2005.

From 1982 to 1983 and 1990 to 1991 he was also Minister for Planning and the Environment at times. After his resignation, Jameel, who had also been one of eight members of parliament ( Majlis ) nominated by the President since 1989 , became special advisor to the President. On April 30, 2008, he was awarded the honorary title of Senior Minister by President Gayoom .

Jameel died of complications from a myocardial infarction in Singapore General Hospital .
