HALMA - The European network of literary centers
HALMA - the European network of literary centers e. V. is an association that networks literary institutions across Europe in order to promote cultural dialogue. In addition to various international projects, the network works primarily in the organization of a scholarship program for authors among the member houses.
organization
The organs of the non-profit association are the twice-yearly general meeting and the association's board. The headquarters of the management is in Berlin, where the office is also located. The network is supported by the European Union and the Robert Bosch Foundation .
history
The association was founded in 2006 by the Berlin Literary Colloquium , the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Borderland Foundation (Sejny, Poland). When the initiative was presented to the Foreign Office on May 11, 2007, then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called HALMA an “exemplary European initiative” that was also “forward-looking in terms of cultural policy”. The author Ilja Trojanow described the potential of the network in his guide Das Netz von Indra : “I am firmly convinced that in a globalized world we must develop an ethic of comprehensive networking and thus far-reaching responsibility. And that especially in a Europe that is growing together, we have to celebrate our diversity on the basis of our existential commonality. Networks like HALMA can make a significant contribution to helping us recognize (and not forget) that we are not the same, but equally involved. "
Board
The association's board consists of Sally Baker (Deputy President), Ieva Balode (Treasurer), Dinu Adam (Deputy Treasurer) and Mart Siilmann (Auditor). The office in Berlin was headed by Laura Seifert from 2009 to 2012.

activities
In addition to organizing, helping and coordinating cooperation and creating a networked cultural and literary scene in Europe, the HALMA network organizes a scholarship program in which authors from the countries of the HALMA members spend work stays in two HALMA houses. In addition, HALMA initiated two international projects for the first time in 2011.
Scholarship program
Writers , translators and literary intermediaries can live and work at two HALMA member houses for one month each as part of a HALMA grant . The scholarship holders receive a monthly flat rate of 1,000 euros plus 750 euros for travel expenses. In addition to the stays in two HALMA houses, the scholarship includes public appearances in the form of readings, discussions and workshops in the respective countries. In addition to the opportunity to work on other texts, literary professionals should be brought closer to the literary scene in other European countries and contacts should be initiated. The selection of the scholarship holders is done by the HALMA members in cooperation with the HALMA office. A personal application is not possible. The literary or essayistic texts or translations created in connection with the scholarship will be published online in the library of the HALMA network. This is done in German , English and mostly in the original language.

European library
The European Library founded and maintained by HALMA comprises over 30 texts that were created in the context of the initiative. In addition to forewords on the establishment of the network, there are above all essays by the scholarship holders that were created during their work stays and are made available on the homepage in German and English.
Projects
With Letters to Milosz , the association's first transnational project was launched in March 2011. On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Polish Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz , readings, discussions and school workshops on his work were held along the travel route in “Rodzinna Europe”. As part of the project, numerous essays were created by writers from EU and non-EU member states who deal with Miłosz's ideas and their own visions for the future of Europe. A competition was held for the graphics for the publications. Letters to Milosz is supported by the European cultural foundation , the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia and others.
In September and October 2011, the second transnational project of the network will start under the title Literature in Flux . Writers, translators and journalists will sail along the Danube from Ruse in Bulgaria to Vienna on a ship and enter into a dialogue about the common cultural region. The aim of the project is to create lasting cooperation between cultural workers in the Western Balkans and Turkey and other European regions.
