Daniel Hensel (born April 17, 1978 in Büdingen ) is a German composer , video artist , musicologist and music theorist .

Life

From 1994 to 1999 Hensel was educated at the Hoch Conservatory a . a. Instructed by the Austrian composer Gerhard Schedl in composition , counterpoint , composition and instrumentation . From 1999 he studied composition at the University of Music in Würzburg with Heinz Winbeck . In 2003 he switched to Manfred Trojahn at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . There he passed the diploma examination with distinction in 2004. He also attended the group lessons of the composer Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe . In 2005 he completed a postgraduate course in composition with Michael Obst and then studied again in the master class with Heinz Winbeck. From 2009 to 2011 he studied musicology with Peter Ackermann and was with the 2011 dissertation The music Gerhard Schedl at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main doctorate .

Hensel's works have been played at various festivals and workshops, as well as on the radio, including at the Kasseler Musiktage 2005 (world premiere of Zwischen den Klänge op.9, musicians of the Kasseler Staatstheater, conducted by Bernhard Lang ), broadcast on HR 2. In June 2007 the reflections for orchestra op. 16 were premiered by the young.euro.classics under the direction of Sebastian Weigle at the handover of the German EU Council Presidency as the German contribution of the pasticcio to the European anthem in the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin . The flautist Carin Levine produced a flute piece written especially for her by Hensels in the BR Studio Franken . The programming of Gesang des gesegneten Leben op.18 with Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony , a commissioned work for the Stuttgart Opera, premiered by GMD Manfred Honeck, is certainly an important musical highlight for Hensel.

The musicologist Christian Heindl states in his essay about Daniel Hensel in the program booklet for the 2nd symphony concert in the Liederhalle Stuttgart on December 7th, 2008: “It may not be wrong, Hensel (who is a member of both the German Association of Composers and the Austrian Association of Composers ) to see a line of tradition from Schubert to Mahler and his teacher Schedl into the present. Accordingly, according to Hensel's own statement, a lifelong dream comes true with the world premiere of Gesang des gesegneten Leben op.18 : the joint programming of one of his works in conjunction with Gustav Mahler ”.

With the String Sextet 20 op. Klärchen song , a commissioned work by the Kassel Music Days 2009, premiered by Ensemble Modern under the direction of Jonathan Stockhammer , working with the start Doblinger , a reissue of the work took place in the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna by the ensemble lux . The ensemble lux also played the world premiere of the 1st string quartet in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. In 2011 Hensels began working with the filmmaker Edgar Reitz . Hensel has also been composing electroacoustic music since 2012. In 2013 the collaboration with Marianna Oczkowska and Tomasz Skweres began in Vienna.

Hensel arranged the “Farewell Symphony by Joseph Haydn as well as the 8th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven for chamber ensemble, which were part of a China tour of the Young Euro Classics Festival Orchestra under the direction of Tang Muhai a . a. were played in the cities of Shanghai and Tianjin .

Hensel completed his habilitation in systematic musicology at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg in 2016 and has been a private lecturer there ever since . For the process he developed the music analysis software PALESTRiNIZER together with the software developer Ingo Jache and published the knowledge gained with the software in tonality research in the habilitation thesis as "Contributions to music informatics, mode, sound and time design in Lassus and Palestrina motets". He also teaches historical musicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main and was a teacher for special tasks at the Saarland University .

Hensel is a member of the following associations: German Composers Association , Austrian Composers Association , Austrian Society for Contemporary Music and GEMA .

Since 2013, Hensel has also been active as a video artist in combination with his electronic pieces.

Together with the Austrian musicologist Christian Heindl and the former Schedl student and composer Roman Pawollek , Hensel actively campaigned for the performances of Schedl's works. This led to a cooperation between the Viennese association for contemporary music il rilievo and the Alte Schmiede as well as the Studio for New Music Würzburg . His work, “Der Scheintod”, from the Knaben Wunderhorn, was premiered by the Ensemble Platypus and the soloist Ursula Langmayr in the Austrian Cultural Forum in the Austrian Embassy in Berlin. In 2017 Hensel also composed children's songs based on James Krüss . 2019 took place u. a. the cooperation with the HR as well as the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg and the Elbphilharmonie.

Hensel is married to the sociologist Dorota Ewa Hensel, the couple lives in Büdingen and has four children.
