Compositional style

In general, Skweres' compositional style can be described as contemporary expressive, but not avant-garde. The composer himself describes him as follows: "For me as a musician, the search for the balance between the emotional and intellectual side of art plays a particularly important role. I see my two main professional activities - composing and playing the cello - as complementary artistic activities, that help me to find my own, personal quality of expression. In my opinion, the process of composing is a thorough study of human perception. The question of how I as a composer can stimulate certain emotional impressions of the listener is the most exciting part of mine The confrontation with the phenomenon of time also plays a central role in my works: How can I manipulate the listener's perception of time in such a way that it is perceived not as a constant but as a movement that is always at different speeds?

He sees the similarity of the timbre of the cello to the human voice as an inspiration for his compositional style: "In order to touch the listener emotionally, Skweres initially relied in his compositions on the" humanity "inherent in the cello, which he compares with the linearity of the song . "

An important aspect of his music is the elaboration of the sound surface changes: "Skweres always focuses on the sound in his compositions. Glissandi are a frequent stylistic device that remains exciting due to the differentiated use. In combination with dynamic development, these are immersed in finely tuned timbres, whereby these continuous progressions allow the listener to immerse themselves in the sometimes fast, sometimes slow grinding sounds. These are contrasted by repeated tones or chords that create a temporal orientation. "
